More About Me.

There's more detail about my experience in the page below.
Pleae don't hesitate to email me if you'd like a copy of my CV.

I have been working in the events and entertainment industry since 2001 in a variety of roles and settings.
My current focus is on developing a new aspect to my career building on my strengths and experience to support productions of all kinds; with a particular emphasis on the enhanced production of orchestral music. I am interested in hearing from anyone who would like a versatile, hard-working technical manager for projects, events or longer-term work.

Most recently, I was Technical Manager of Liverpool Philharmonic where I was responsible for a team of 5 full-time technicians and circa 10 casual/zero-hours staff. My role included day to day management of the department, and all areas of the show advancing process including developing technical specifications, price lists and plans. I was heavily involved in a number of special projects with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; providing technical advice as well as lighting and AV design to family concerts, Christmas concerts, Film-with-Orchestra events and other special concerts including collaborations with artists and bands such as Jon Lord, Ian Broudie, CAST and the Bootleg Beatles.

I have a NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health, an considerable experience in providing approachable, readable and achievable Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures. I am well versed in the LOLER regulations as well as other essential regulations relating to the entertainment industry.

Having worked with Liverpool Philharmonic for 11 years, I am very familiar with all that goes into making a successful arts organisation, as well as working in and developing a listed building - both in terms of how best to make incremental changes, and how to manage the practical operational elements of a large capital redevelopment.

Throughout my training and career, I have worked with a wide variety of people - from students, colleagues, crews and production managers of many shows, to conductors of visiting orchestras, and in some cases individual artistes themselves. In dealing with such a range of people, I have developed good interpersonal skills and when problems occur, I am skilled at using the right language in order to help control difficult and stressful situations and am able to offer on the spot solutions to problems. I always aim to conduct myself and my work in such a way that the client is happy with the service they receive.

I work very well as part of a small team, able to encourage and motivate colleagues without stepping on their toes. I am used to working long and unsociable hours. I am able to meet deadlines effectively and I take pleasure in a successful production/presentation, and in a 'job well done'.

The bulk of my early training was in lighting, and I have experience ranging from small folk gigs and rural arts centres, to providing lighting for a visiting band for a single gig, through to designing and operating lighting for drama, dance and musical theatre, using a wide range of lanterns - including intelligent lighting - and lighting control systems along the way. I have a good general knowledge of sound, both live reinforcement and recording ensembles.
I have experience of both Stage and Production Management for a variety of productions and in a variety of spaces and situations, including the Edinburgh Fringe, and successfully re- mounting a production which I had worked on while training at the Battersea Arts Centre.
I am experienced with AV ranging from 35mm film projection to 4k Digital Cinema, and large format digital projection of presentations, videos etc. I have recent experiences with Film-with-Orchestra events, working on screenings of Wizard of Oz, Home Alone, Pirates of the Caribbean and E.T. with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. I have also worked on concerts for schools and families which involve a heavy use of AV - slides and videos mixed with live camera work to provide a new perspective on the Orchestra to the audience.

This has given me a thorough knowledge of all aspects of the production process, and the skills required to successfully work in a venue with performances of all scale and complexity being presented. I have also acquired a good awareness of what contributions other staff make to a successful production, from other technical specialists, to sales and marketing staff, to management.
